How to Measure Current with a Hall Current Transducer?

Hall current transducer is made according to the Hall effect principle and applied to Ampere's law, which produces a magnetic field proportional to the current around the current-carrying conductor, while the Hall device is used to measure this magnetic field. Therefore, non-contact measurement of current is possible with Hall electrical current sensors. Hall current sensors can be divided into direct current sensors and closed-loop Hall current sensors. The Hall effect was discovered by E.H. Hall in 1879, which defined the relationship between magnetic field and induced voltage, and this effect is completely different from traditional induction. When a current passes through a conductor located in a magnetic field, the magnetic field exerts a force on the electrons in the conductor perpendicular to their direction of motion, creating a voltage difference between the ends of the conductor.

Hall electrical current sensors are sensors that use the Hall effect to convert a primary high current into a secondary small voltage signal. The designed Hall sensor often amplifies the weak voltage signal into a standard voltage or current signal through an operational amplifier or other circuits. The Hall current sensor made by the above principle is called a direct current Hall sensor or an open-loop Hall current sensor.

Measuring methods of Hall electrical current sensors

  • The primary wire should be placed at the center of the sensor hole as much as possible and should not be placed off-center.

  • The primary wire should be placed as full as possible in the sensor hole, and there should be no gaps.

  • The current to be measured should be close to the standard rated value, and the difference should not be too large. If there is only one high rated current sensor available and the current value to be measured is much lower than its rated value, in order to improve the measurement accuracy, the primary wire can be wound a few more turns to be closer to the rated value.

  • When the current to be measured is IPN/10, it can still have high precision at 25℃.

Three ways to measure the current of Hall electrical current sensors

  • Use Hall electrical current sensors; Hall current sensors can reach up to several hundred thousand amperes and can be detected, but the cost is relatively high.

  • If it is an AC current, an AC current transformer can be used; the output signal is an AC0-1A or AC0-5A signal, which can be received by digital display meters and transmitters.

  • Rogowski coil; the Rogowski coil can only detect power frequency AC current and requires an external integrator. The output voltage at full scale is AC0-1V of the original waveform, which can be converted into a signal received by a digital display meter or a transmitter for further conversion.
